Diving for Fun

The underwater world is a magical place where you can experience a wide range of aquatic environments all over the world. The initial course needed to dive is the PADI Open Water Diver course. And, because there is always more to learn, PADI has developed a wide range of continuing education classes to increase your knowledge of the underwater world and how to safely dive in it.

Transform your life - experience the 75% of the planet that many people never get to see. Learn to dive with SeaSports and our highly trained staff of instructors - your life will never be the same.

Open Water Scuba Diver

The PADI Open Water Diver course teaches student divers the foundational knowledge
and skills they need to dive with a buddy, independent of supervision. PADI Open Water Divers are qualified to:

  • Dive with a buddy independent of supervision while applying the knowledge and skills they learn in this course, within the limits of their training and experience.
  • Obtain air fills, scuba equipment and other services.
  • Plan, conduct and log open water no stop (no decompression) dives when properly equipped and when accompanied by a buddy in conditions with which they have training and/or experience.
  • Continue their dive training with a specialty dive (Adventure Dive), in the PADI Adventures in Diving program or in PADI Specialty courses

The Open Water Diver course is your first diving certification level. This course is comprised of three separate areas: Knowledge Development, Confined Water Dives, and Open Water Certification Dives.

At SeaSports, we encourage independent study for knowledge development before class begins. You will watch the DVD, read your PADI Open Water Manual, and complete all knowledge reviews in the manual before you get to class. When class meets, we will go over any questions you have and spend the time needed to ensure that all of your questions are answered.

Then, it's off to the pool! After all, no one EVER learns to dive sitting in a classroom. First we will do our 300-yard mask, fin, and snorkel swim and then do a 10-minute float. Next we will start our confined water sessions. When we have completed our 5 sessions you will be able to remove and clear a mask underwater, hover in midwater and feel comfortable with all the other skills you will need on the open water certification dives.

Finally, you're off to open water. This is where you demonstrate to your instructor that you are ready to be a diver. You must complete 4 dives over two days in order to complete your certification. You demonstrate the skills you have learned in confined water during these dives and have a whole lot of fun while you're doing it. The result - a PADI Open Water Diver certification card, recognized worldwide.

The classroom portion is taught at SeaSports and the pool sessions are normally done at the Dynamo Swim Center at the corner of Jones Bridge and Abbots Bridge roads. Group classes are Friday evening from 5:30 - 9:30 and Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm.
